Differences in Psychological Professions

Different types of help for psycho-emotional health

There are many significant differences between psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy, sexual therapy, transpersonal, healing, and natural therapies. They are overlapping and have similarities in work, however, they are different professions:

Psychiatrists are qualified doctors of classical biomedicine with a specialization in diagnosing and treating mental illnesses. They can prescribe you psychiatric medicines and can give you a hospital treatment.

Neuropsychiatrists are specialized doctors dealing with central nervous system disorders (brain and spinal cord).

Classical psychologists are social scientists who study behavior and mental processes. They mainly work is in the fields of research, education, and commerce. Psychologists provide, administer and interpret psychological tests and evaluate them.

Clinical psychologists undergo additional postgraduate training and qualify for word-therapies. They are not doctors and do not prescribe drugs. They work in a similar way to psychotherapists, although they can also use psychometric tests, interviews, and direct observing of behaviors in their work to evaluate the client and determine the option of therapy.

Transpersonal psychologists try to integrate ancient wisdom and spiritual principles with modern Western psychology and explain them in contemporary scientific language. Transpersonal Psychology deals with a broad spectrum of human psycho-spiritual development – from our most deep wounds and needs, through the existential crisis of human existence, to the highest, transcendental capacity of our consciousness. It includes, evaluates, and integrates: psychological and spiritual, mental health and suffering, common and unusual states of consciousness, modern western and traditional eastern perspectives, postmodern insights, indigenous traditions, analytical intellect, direct experience, and contemplative way of understanding.

Psychotherapists undergo a profound and experiential four-year postgraduate training program to work with different people who have a wide range of emotional disorders, psychological problems, and difficulties. Psychotherapists are trained in one or more psychotherapy modalities.

Transpersonal psychotherapists undergo graduate and postgraduate studies in which they train different forms of counseling or psychotherapy with an emphasis on transpersonal, transcendent, or spiritual aspects of human experiences. The ultimate goal of transpersonal psychotherapy is not just to alleviate suffering but to integrate the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of well-being. It involves research and focuses on the client’s potential and the development of internal resources and creativity.

Psychological counselors can advise after a relatively short training, although some have many years of experience. It is common for consultants to provide short-term therapy, which does not go into too much “digging” on the problem, as is the case with psychotherapy.

Sexologists are experts dealing with the promotion of sexual health and the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. They have educated psychotherapists with additional education in the field of sexology.

Alternative sexologists are experts with interdisciplinary knowledge (West and East) about sex, which combines the psychological and spiritual aspects of sexuality. Their job is to educate, teach, and counsel couples and individuals.

Hypnotherapists are psychotherapists who are doing medical hypnosis, combining it eclectically with the elements of hypnosis, psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, NLP, and transpersonal psychology. Hypnotherapy is commonly used in dental care, painless labor, preoperative and postoperative conditions, for AIDS and cancer patients, pain management, insomnia, life-threatening illnesses, vaginismus, fears and phobias, stress, sexual abuse, personal development, and addictions.

Transpersonal hypnotherapists are psychotherapists who use in their work synthesis of transpersonal psychology, clinical and Erickson hypnosis, medical hypnotherapy, NLP, regression in past lives, spiritual principles, shamanism, and intuition.

Hypnotizers are individuals who have passed the course of hypnotic induction. Most often they use hypnosis to quit smoking or a magician’s show, so it is so-called “Stage hypnosis”.

Natural medicine therapists are trained specialists in the field of natural medicine such as Ayurveda, aromatherapy, homeopathy, Bach’s flower therapy, etc. which, with the help of various herbal remedies, oils, herbs, and the like, treat psychosomatic disbalances.

Healers are educated individuals through various courses in the field of spiritual-energy medicine, using energy, prayer, and various spiritual practices to contribute to the health of their clients. It is about techniques like Theta healing, reiki, bioenergy, reconnection, yagya, guided meditation, etc.

There are many techniques and methods for self-help and healing. It is always best to choose the methods and techniques that intuitively attract you, which you have previously researched and have resonated with your understanding.
